Ellie's Seed Story by Abbie Weimer

Ellie shared some interesting insights of her seed story. She explained how much she had learned about the different cycles affecting her plant, broccoli. She was especially surprised by the nitrogen cycle, as she hadn't known much about it before. She had a good laugh when her plant never grew, compared to the inches of growth of other teams' plants. She is convinced they were faulty seeds. This made her think a lot about seeds, and about their "expiration date". She asked, "how do seeds go bad? and how long does a seed usually stay viable for?" She found that seeds can be damaged, or dead by the time they are planted. This is more common the older the seeds get. Even though her plant wasn't successful, she still learned a lot about plant cycles and seed germination.

Since the beginning of the school year, my teammates and I have closely observed our own Brassica Oleracea, or broccoli. We’ve even observed other groups’ individual Brassica Oleracea plants including kale, cauliflower, cabbage, and of course, broccoli. Many people think of these vegetables as different vegetables entirely due to their relatively small differentiations in size and color. However, they actually share more than 99% of their DNA with each other. The most variation (greatest number of different forms) between the plants lies in the leaves. They are all different shapes and sizes. Some were large and flimsy, while others were small and stiff. Some were round, some were ridged; the leaves definitely varied in shape. Not only did the shape of the leaves vary, but so did the size. The size demonstrated the greatest range of variation as the average length of the leaves ranged from 12cm to nearly 20cm. A Matter of Selection  Since the start of the school year, my team and I have had the eye-opening opportunity to plant and observe our very own Brassica oleracea, or broccoli, plants in the garden. Throughout the experience with our own plant, we have also been able to witness many other types of Brassica oleracea grow and mature to develop different traits at every stage of their life cycles. Despite the fact that all 4 types of plants growing in the garden (broccoli, cabbage, kale and cauliflower) share 99% of the same DNA, upon close observation and data collection it is clear that, along with the obvious similarities, there are also notable differences and variation present among the organisms.  During our investigation, we discovered that the characteristic of the plants that exhibited the most variation (greatest number of different forms) was the leaf shape and size.
