Hailey's Seed Story - by Hope

Hailey was the person I interviewed to understand how her experience with TSOTS project went. She had to complete some difficult tasks during this project, but she was also able to have some fun while working. Hailey thought it was hard to grow a plant especially having to determine all the factors and try to control them. Her plant grew a bit faster than she thought it would and was pleasantly surprised. One time she had fun during the experiment was when her team member pretended to eat the plant. The part the had to think about the most was when figuring out how much water to give the plant. They decided that 75 mL every other day was the right amount. It was very interesting to learn about a classmate's experience and think about how it compared to mine.

Since the beginning of the school year, my teammates and I have closely observed our own Brassica Oleracea, or broccoli. We’ve even observed other groups’ individual Brassica Oleracea plants including kale, cauliflower, cabbage, and of course, broccoli. Many people think of these vegetables as different vegetables entirely due to their relatively small differentiations in size and color. However, they actually share more than 99% of their DNA with each other. The most variation (greatest number of different forms) between the plants lies in the leaves. They are all different shapes and sizes. Some were large and flimsy, while others were small and stiff. Some were round, some were ridged; the leaves definitely varied in shape. Not only did the shape of the leaves vary, but so did the size. The size demonstrated the greatest range of variation as the average length of the leaves ranged from 12cm to nearly 20cm. A Matter of Selection  Since the start of the school year, my team and I have had the eye-opening opportunity to plant and observe our very own Brassica oleracea, or broccoli, plants in the garden. Throughout the experience with our own plant, we have also been able to witness many other types of Brassica oleracea grow and mature to develop different traits at every stage of their life cycles.
